Peels treatments promote anti-aging, smoother, firmer skin
|
As we age, the accumulated effects of sun exposure, pollutants, acne, and scarring can damage our skin and cause us to look older than we are. Such skin damage can be treated with a chemical peel, a non-invasive procedure designed to promote cell growth and produce smoother, clearer skin.
Peels are the ultimate 'skin pick-me up' for both men and women. They are a great way to provide a deep exfoliation allowing the new soft skin cells to come to the surface. Generally you can expect your skin to be looking moisturised and youthful from the moment you leave our salon.
The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world. Peels were performed in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to help people achieve smoother, more beautiful skin. Today, chemical facial peels are popular because they offer nearly immediate results and are a very quick and cost effective procedure. If you want to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and uneven pigmentation, or if you simply want to rejuvenate your skin, then peels really are a great option.
The two most commonly used chemicals for peels are the alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and the beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Procedures using these chemicals are commonly referred to as "lunch hour" peels because they're the mildest of the chemical peels and show few after-effects; some people get them on their lunch hours and are ready to go back to work right away. Both of these acids are also found in many over-the-counter cosmetic products, such as moisturizers and sunscreens, although when a therapist performs the peels, concentrations are much higher.
Lactic acid is not a "fruit acid" like other AHAs, as it comes from milk. (We like Lactic acid as it has a very moisturising effect on the skin.
The two most commonly used acid peels are:
Chemical peels sound very scary, but in fact they are generally painless. If there is any discomfort, then it is worth it for the result. Natural AHA and BHA peels are a safe and effective treatment to enhance colour, texture and smoothness of the skin.
Chemical peels rarely result in serious complications, but certain risks do exist. These risks include scarring, infection, swelling, changes in skin tone, and cold sore outbreaks. You can reduce the risks associated with facial peels by following all of your therapist’s instructions completely and by providing her with a complete medical history.
There are a number of different peels that we use depending on your skin type and how many peels you have had in the past and also the type of skin care you are using at home.
Firstly peels are not suitable for dark skin colours, as unfortunately darker skins can be prone to pigmentation. If you do have dark skin then we suggest you look at Microdermabrasion treatments instead.
Secondly you must be using the Ultraceuticals (or equal) product range as after care. This range conditions your skin pre peel and also provides protection after the peels. Also it is scientifically proven that adding Vitamin enriched products to the skin will also improve the outcome of the peels.
Thirdly you must not expose your skin to the sun for at least 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after treatment. The reason for this is that we are exposing fresh new skin cells and they can be very easily damaged by exposure to UVA and UVB rays.
Contra-indications to peels are: Pregnancy or lactating, Recent facial surgery, Use of Roaccutane or similar products. Herpes or open sores of any kind, Radiation therapy, Reaction to salicylates (aspirin)
