Hydroquinone remains the most popular of skin whitening actives and is used in most creams at 4% concentration however some products are available at a dangerously high 10%. Hydroquinone works by inhibiting the conversion of the enzyme tyrosine to the skin pigment melanin – the higher the concentration of melanin the darker the skin.

The efficacy of Hydroquinone is directly related to the concentration of the preparation however as with most skin care more is not necessarily better. Hydroquinone also has been linked with the medical condition known as ochronosis in which the skin becomes dark and thick.
